So you just got a new console and now you are wondering what games to get, or maybe you are trying to buy a present for that gamer in your life but you are completely green to the scene? Here are a few helpful tips to get the most out of your money. After all video games do not come cheap these days and the economy means we all have a little less cash in our pockets.
- Decide your interest: Determine what type of gamer you or the recipient is. Are you more into story or gameplay? Are you a dungeons and dragons fan? If so get an RPG (Role Playing Game). Maybe you are more interested in a gritty adventure/war game if so you should look into FPS (first person shooters). Sports fanatics can find videogames tailored to their particular sport, these games tend to be highly competitive and offer a lot of replayability at the sacrifice of a story or decent single player experience. Strategy games can be appealing to those who like to control armies and play in a more managerial role.
-Look at Reviews: This step is very important because with so many titles being released at around this time of year, you should really check to make sure you are not wasting 60+ dollars on a lemon. While movie critics tend to have their own tastes, video game critics tend to be pretty dead on most of the time. Try not to look at player reviews though as they are hastily written and often biased. The websites I personally use are IGN, Gamespot, and Gametrailers. These sites will often have an “editor’s pick” or “game of the month” award. Just to be safe, you should check more than one site for reviews of the same game to get a general feel for the broad spectrum of reviews.
-Lastly, to save a little money, try Craigslist or Ebay to purchase. Buying a game is not like buying a car or a toy, extended use will not degrade the quality of the videogame and as long as it doesn’t have a deep gash in the disk, it will run fine. If you can find a game you want for 40 dollars, get it because there is no point in spending more to get a new version!
So there you are, a few helpful tips to hopefully serve as the backbone of your holiday game buying foray. Don’t hesitate to leave a comment if you have a question or want to share your own techniques!
