San Francisco bus stops with free solar-powered Wi-Fi

I usually don’t agree to any government hand outs and freebies, unless it’s a tax return, but this is one government freebie I think is pretty cool, and innovative! San Francisco is planning to build 360 new bus stops that will feature free Wi-Fi powered via solar power. The project should be done by 2013 with each bus stop costing $30,000. That seems a bit pricey, but the bus stops will use LED lighting to be more efficient, about four and a half times more efficient, and any unused power will feed back into the cities grid. So over time the bus stops should pay for themselves, over a very long time that is. I wonder if they will monitor who is accessing the Wi-Fi and just how much bandwidth they are using. I can just see hippies in their VW bug parked next to a bus stop mooching free Wi-Fi while reading High Times online.
