Touchable Holograms

We’re still a long way from the holograms of sci-fi movies and shows such as Star Wars and Star Trek. Then again, if a holo-deck like the ones featured in Star Trek was ever invented, it would likely mean the end of mankind as we know it. Why waste all your time in the real world when you can sculpt whatever you wish in the Holo-deck? Holograms don’t exist and may never exist because of the nature of light (it cannot be bent) therefore any time you project light it will go as a straight beam and cannot be altered in any way (save for the force from a black hole). Still, that has not stopped clever researchers from the University of Tokyo from creating this illusion of a hologram using Wii-motes and a concave mirror. The remotes track where your hand is and the resulting effects are shown on the ball displayed on a concave screen. With a “airborne tactile display”, researchers were also able to generate the illusion of feeling the objects that were displayed on the device.
